| 8/7/10 We at Summer Sea are saddened to say that our long time friend and owner, Jim Ward has passed away. He will be missed!! Obituary for Jim Ward After a valiant effort, on August 7, 2010 Jim Ward lost his 19 month battle with cancer. He was 68. During World Ward II his parents were held prisoner by the Japanese in Hong Kong. They were Baptist Missionaries and were interred during his mother’s pregnancy. He was born on a ship in the Indian Ocean in 1942, a prisoner of war of the Japanese. Perhaps that is where his love of the sea began. During his life he was a Master Instructor in scuba, owned several dive shops and ran charters. He was a boating and fishing enthusiast, fishing both off shore and back country as well as freshwater fly, an avid photographer, amateur astronomer and pilot. Jim spent his working career in the fire service, first in the Air Force, then 31 years with the City of Hollywood (FL) Fire Department. He integrated Emergency Medical Services into the Fire Service in Hollywood, and that level of service has become the national standard. He was in one of the first paramedic classes held in the state of Florida. He served as Rescue Chief in Hollywood for 5 years before becoming Chief of Department for 12 years. After retiring from Hollywood he traveled the country as a fire and EMS consultant. He did a pro bono study of Fire Service for Monroe County and was recognized as an expert in EMS delivery. Jim and Kathy, his wife of 31 years moved to Islamorada in 1997 after having a getaway home here for 10 years. He volunteered his time with Islamorada Fire Rescue during its formative years and served on the Board of Directors for his condominium. During his life they traveled extensively and he finally got to see the prison in Hong Kong where his parents had been interred. His love for the Fire Service was matched only by his love for his family. His two sons, Scott and Brian followed in their father’s footsteps and became firefighter/paramedics. Jim’s two daughters-in-law Jamie and Brunna also proudly work in the Fire Service. Jim became a proud “Papa” to his grandsons Sam and Kyle. Jim lived his life to the fullest and died that way, surrounded by family and close friends. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, August 21, 2010 at Island Community Church, 83250 Overseas Hwy. in Islamorada, at 11 AM, followed by a Celebration of Life. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, a donation be made in Jim’s memory to the VNA & Hospice of the FL Keys www. hospicevna.com or to the Firefighter Cancer Support Network, www.FirefighterCancerSupport.org |
